this link was going around yesterday with a lot of "props to him for saying what a lot of us think!!!" curious how many of those tweets stay up since it's getting backlash now

no one who publicly said they loved this (excellent) post is surprised it’s getting backlash.

this sentence for instance: "They have each other’s back, and focus relentlessly on the long term goal, avoiding distractions." is a national conversation considered a distraction at work? isn't it naive to assume that events occurring outside have no bearing on the workplace?

there's a difference between respectfully talking over politics at lunch, which people already struggle with, and zero opt-out, company-wide political activism with turbo-charged slack chats that cripple productivity and make everyone other than activists miserable

i mean, I agree that this is a major thing, and it's also not endemic to any one company or industry (at least in my experience) — journalism currently going through this too i find some of the solutions offered thus far to be somewhat out of sync with company histories, though

oh, there are absolutely companies trying to walk this all back now, but imo that's evidence the google model isn't working. it's not even working for google, and they have enough money that probably 90% of employees actually could just talk about the news all day.

Perhaps I missed the reaction but I don't see what's controversial about Brian's post. It's what companies should do IMO. When I worked for tech start-ups before journalism, we never talked politics. Also, shouldn't the market (e.g. new recruits) decide if this is a good move?
