I see a lot of parallels between SF now and NYC of the 80s/90s. And a popular right-wing bogeyman is exactly what fixed NYC at the time. The irony of those sorts of policies being what SF needs now is almost too much.
many differences, but the most important imo is nyc is structured as one, large city. change is possible. sf is one TINY city in a quasi mega city of smaller governments operating semi-autonomously.

Not to mention , what an opportunity for different trials with all of the different cities in the Bay Area. So many different leadership groups could operate as nodes trialing different solutions. Why is it such a monoculture?!
