congrats on the plastic straw ban, but california's now on fire. it's time our leaders assume responsibility for this crisis of their own making, finally listen to the scientists they implore us all to "just believe," and take controlled burning seriously.https://solana.substack.com/p/the-2020-gavin-newsom-fires …

Insanely hard, dangerous, expensive. Requires coordination wit feds. Private forest land owned by logging companies that thin their forests would probably require eminent domain, which means a 10 year legal fight and SCOTUS weighing in. But we could do it with the state land.

This thread ignores all of the permitting barriers that the State of CA places on landowners (incl private and federal) that WANT to manage their land to reduce fire risks. There’s a LOT the state could to collaborate more effectively.

Maybe it's the only solution, but I can't see it happening anytime soon without congress and the feds footing a big part of the bill.

Controlled burns are too resource-intensive to be used so widely, and are feasible for only a few months in the year (IF the state doesn’t suddenly yank the permits). Forest thinning, with incentives allowing limited harvest of commercial-grade timber, must play a bigger role.
