question, is there any liberal arts-y requirement at the main computer engineering schools that would instill students with a comprehensive understanding of the democratic process?

Personally? yes, i certainly got a fuller understanding. i don't think i'm going out on a limb by saying you learn things about the modern world when you take a history class
