A Stanford study from this year yet again found that controlled burns work but are stymied by politicians like Newsom https://news.stanford.edu/press-releases/2020/01/20/setting-fires-avoid-fires/ …

Not just controlled burning. Veg treatment is an important tool as well. That said, science supports that both are factors. Climate change is resulting in longer burn seasons and extremely dry fuel conditions are more common.

I see no scientific difference between the people who say "duh climate change can't exist bc it's snowing" and "climate change is why we can't deal with wildfires" Maybe can make some claims about increased freq, but no controlled burns and not putting out small fires seems big

@pyrogeog do you agree with this? (i know nothing, genuinely curious if experts agree that controlled burns would be meaningful)Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Is there any even halfway respectable scientist who thinks the effects of climate change would be significant and noticeable from year to year?

Why not both? I don't think we can deny the change in climate - fire season is 2.5 months longer than it used to be (https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/california-wildfires-illustrate-the-consequences-of-climate-change …). Also, curious to who actually should drive these burns, given that 57% of CA forests are managed by USDA Forest Service, 40% are private

Now of course private landowners are restricted by state policies when it comes to burns, but I think the state may have less power than we think it has on the topic, and even less resources.
