Istm if they're gonna search anyway, and you know you're not realistically going to hire an attorney to contest the legality of that search, then it's best to just grit your teeth and give them the okay. A bit less chance they plant something in your car &c 'cuz you seemed uppity

Lesson learned I hope. "I absolutely forbid you to search this vehicle. Let me be on my way."

what i say: "sure, you can search my vehicle but first you need to give me permission to search your wife's vehicle"

Good idea to know what you should and shouldn't do in advance. Your rights can vary state by state, but are generally based on Constitutional rights, so shouldn't vary much. Lots of handy guides out there. https://www.aclunc.org/our-work/know-your-rights/know-your-rights-police-interactions …

Same thing happened to me but I refused the search saying they had no probable cause. Magically the dog threw a signal and they strip searched the car anyway. 45 minutes later they released me because they found nothing.
