of public education but it's certainly a near essential skill for everyone at different points in their lives. After all, the people who did split the atom and got us to the moon learned math and science and reading under strict instruction and threats of violence.
I think there's a lot to be said for rigorous academic study, and study of science and math etc., for a small minority of the population. even among most scientists that kind of pressure isn't necessary, and certainly not in 8th grade.
Totally fair but in such sweeping generalities, I will err on the side of more regimented academic focus. Ideally, a less strict approach for the younger ages and shorter, more intense academic periods for, say, 10yo+ In sum, 50 years of softening ed. doesn't have great results.
