It’s way off-impossible for a lone engineer to do anything in secret. ‘Her’ is more likely; Alexa, Siri, and Assistant are evolving there. For robotics, TARS in ‘Interstellar’ is more likely.

Her is also IMO an equally bleak outcome for humanity. It's not that our creations seek to destroy us. We aren't worth the attention. It's as if we were stranded on a desert island & made a raft, but upon completion the raft decided there were more interesting things in the sea.
