why is “everyone needs a degree these days” an argument for government funded college rather than a less intrusive government, which forces everyone from lawyers to teachers to go to college ???

It’s not just the “government” - plenty of professional careers don’t actually need degrees but companies still demand them. I don’t have a bachelors and I’m very lucky to have gotten as far as I have in my career despite there’s really no rational reason anyone *needs* one
