Don’t see what’s paradoxical about it. White collar crime and corruption don’t get nearly the punishment they deserve, mostly because the people wear white collars.

the answer to “i think we’re being too hard on nonviolent criminals” is to be less hard on nonviolent criminals, not throw everyone who cheats on an entrance exam into federal prison lol

I guess it depends whether one’s critique of the criminal justice system is that it’s unfair or overly punitive in abstract terms, or that it’s a tool of oppression of the less powerful. The latter view is consistent with wanting a harsh punishment in this case.

It’s perfectly consistent to believe both that too-harsh sentences are regularly given to criminal defendants, and that a privileged class of people rarely faces meaningful consequences for wrongdoing.
