i do wish we were able to talk honestly about antifa, because something is clearly happening here. regional (largely pac northwest), mostly white, downwardly mobile, violent, and the discontent isn't coming from nowhere. can't help these people before accepting they exist.

branding is everything naming it antifa makes people think they are anti-fascist even if they take fascist actions
i mean that's the evasive take for sure, i just genuinely don't think anyone defending them in media actually believes this

I'm blown away how some generally intelligent, thoughtful people I know totally buy into both A) Antifa isn't a real organization and B) Those that "self-organize" under the Antifa brand are "fighting fascism" so their actions are justified.

cognitive dissonance. I know that term gets thrown around a lot these days, but that doesn't make it less true. Accepting the true implications of what's happening would invalidate a core pillar of their worldview, and the psyche won't go down without a fight
