Never underestimate the will of the censorious. I heard there was a controversy recently around a platform that’s literally just people talking to each other with their mouths, and there was a push to censor speech by people who weren’t even there.

right, this is why i’m interested in platforms / products / technologies that acknowledge the inevitability of authoritarianism, and preemptively mitigate the threat

One thing I take comfort in: two of their top-grossing newsletters are a) a Republican group, and b) a newsletter that’s critical of Xi. So they know that if they give in, people will go after some of their marquee users.

But if you have this list of emails and you leave substack, you have to get all the people to sign up for some new platform. Otherwise how are they going to pay you? Beware of Trivial Inconveniences

The email list means you can ask them directly for money or sponsorships but far more important than money is the continuation of idea output, in the long run, right?
