Think we need a nonpartisan, respected science comms office, urgently. Expose the tradeoffs for everyone to know, commission studies (e.g. a mask efficacy study would be an obvious one in this scenario), and leave the tradeoff decisions to policymakers / public debate.

We have 2 problems in the present moment: science comms have been singularly terrible, and the experts at the situation at hand are trying to give recommendations factoring in their interpretation of the pop psychology / public policy implications, which aren't accurate at all.
