Easy to look OK when compared only to failed states. Harder when compared to competent states: Taiwan: 0.3 per million (7 deaths) Hong Kong: 0.6 per million (4 deaths) China: 3 per million (4,634 deaths) Singapore: 4 per million (23 deaths) South Korea: 5 per million (269 deaths)
2 island nations, 2 (relatively) small peninsulas, and an authoritarian prison state with a history of lying about coronaviruses that now spans two decades. we didn't do as well as we should have, but this story is much more complicated than i believed.

Germany is an interesting example. Also Denmark, Norway, Finland, Austria, Australia, Canada, Switzerland, Greece. The cross-country comps are difficult, but this entire story is far from over.

This has been a failure of government, a failure of policy and a failure of media. UK is the worst offender. France, Belgium and Spain were hit hard before we realized how to stop it, so that’s a different story. US failed because prevented testing and did a cargo cult lockdown.

But it is true that Sweden has higher weekly rates now than other nations without getting much economic benefit. This story isn’t over, as the US is doing everything it can to maximize a second wave.

Korea is a "small peninsula" with 51 million people, half of which live in the metropolitan area greater than LA. People of Europe and the US don't have the discipline the Koreans have, though, and many of their government's practices strike us as state surveillance.
