I strongly support efforts from @DeanPreston to open a safe camping site in the Haight. We need to open more safe camping spaces while working toward building more shelters and supportive housing. i didn’t say the community liked it — this is an actual disaster — i said the community prefers it to a government camp. we give the city hundreds of millions of dollars a year for this single issue. build shelter.

The community in question has bitterly fought the construction of affordable housing in the neighborhood. The McDonalds nearby is still empty. Yes, we need to build housing, but we can’t let people rot on the street and die in the meantime
