parents seem understandably concerned with where to put their kids while they're working, but no one seems particularly worried their kids are falling behind academically. seems to imply... we all know they're not actually missing much?

I think a lot of people are worried about that, and are trying to compensate with whatever time they have.

I am amazed that anyone *doesn't* know this. Our schools are a glorified daycare with workbooks. The learning they can get elsewhere, the schools are just because modernity has fucked with the way that people live, making it so they need someone to watch their kids during the day

Do you have children? Because I watch my children’s education closely and I am quite impressed. My kids have learned so much

It could be that parents with kids specifically in the learning-to-read years should be pretty worried, because not learning to read in those years will put their kids behind, but for other age groups play/experimenting at home is as valuable on the margin as formal schooling?

Academic achievement is measured relative to the age cohort. When everybody is “falling behind” at the same time by similar margins, you have less of a cause for worry. Kids learn a tremendous amount in schools - I am a parent.

More likely financial shortfalls are more acute than academic

NYC moms pretty freaked out about this. They’re cooking up all manner of schemes like holding the whole city back a year to compensate (?!!!)
