NYC moms pretty freaked out about this. They’re cooking up all manner of schemes like holding the whole city back a year to compensate (?!!!)

It could be that parents with kids specifically in the learning-to-read years should be pretty worried, because not learning to read in those years will put their kids behind, but for other age groups play/experimenting at home is as valuable on the margin as formal schooling?

Children in Finland start school when they are 7 years old. Anything before that is glorified daycare and a way to extinguish their sense of play.pic.twitter.com/856KzOJRHR

Remember the main reason they delayed closing the schools was so kids had something to eat? No complaints about education?

I think this is true to some extent + as humans we prioritize immediate problems (I need to get work done) higher than future ones (my child might have a harder time in school next year).

People aren’t tweeting about it but they’re flipping out. Getting tons of worried texts from cousins with school-age kids

We've been homeschooling for 2 yrs. The first 3 months is a process of coming to terms that school (esp. K-8) is 10% education, 90% daycare wrapped in busy work chosen for reasons completely detached from utility/relevance.
