citing the cost of a home office as your key issue with remote work — bc *other people* can’t afford it — feels a little out of touch. i’m working from my bedroom on a desk i bought for 75 dollars at a flea market, and these days computers are mobile. i’m fine.

I think people are referring to the RE cost savings not being pass down to employees via home office budget
employees are already saving money (partly why our economy is in such bad shape): transportation, fuel, eating out, work clothes, moving to less expensive areas (!!!). for the rest, including the home office if you want it, we should be talking about changing the tax code.
