Our government is bad because it’s the only entity large enough to tackle a crisis like this but intentionally hobbled by people who hate government

It's partially true. The people who should be trying to hold it to a higher standard of accountability instead have given up on the possibility of competent government and try to hamstring it at every opportunity.

California's problem is that microcities control land use instead of the state.

transit, education, homelessness, heroin, violent crime, an actually apocalyptic pension crisis on the horizon, and on top of it all an increasingly tedious nanny-state culture of "vapes are now illegal just because." it's not only a land use problem.

1,3,4,5 are all primarily problems with land use. CA's education system is worlds better than most states, but to the extent that it is underfunded, that's also land use. CA has not banned vapes.

But to the original point, CA lacks an effective opposition party and needs one. We need parties to campaign on "Part of the govt doesn't work well, and we can make it work better" back and forth between the parties, instead of "the govt can't work and we're tearing it down."

i actually completely agree. ideally i'd love to see the DNC become the party of experimentation, and the GOP the party of efficiency.

CA would be better off if the GOP gave up, and the Dems split into a socialist vs neoliberal party, but it won’t happen because splitting Dems would help GOP
