if it were my job to create propaganda for the purpose of reducing the human population, one thing i would do is reframe parenting as “unpaid labor”https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1258094215361413121 …

Who is handling extra housework and home schooling in the pandemic era? A survey suggests women are still disproportionately doing more unpaid labor. https://nyti.ms/3djRar1

Is it wrong though? It seems to fit the concept of opportunity cost pretty well. Every moment you spend raising a child is a moment not spent making money. Ergo, if you want people to raise children you should pay them enough to not be doing something else with their time.

correct in the technical sense, as any number of things can be reduced in such a way, from cooking for friends to practicing starcraft. and no, we don't value parenting as highly as we should. but the language is degrading, dehumanizing, and, let's be real, purposely divisive.

I’ve noticed this more and more over the past year.... doing your own family’s laundry is now “unpaid labor”

my point is not that parenting is unchallenging, nor do i think our culture values it highly enough. my point is that this language is degrading and dehumanizing.

Except the ‘unpaid labor‘ frame makes perfect sense if you’re trying to make sense of the income/wealth gap between men and women

It can be analytically accurate in certain contexts and also a socially harmful framing
