When weighing Marc, who married into one of wealthiest familes in SV, who has ~hundreds of millions in personal wealth and is a board member for the most valuable media company in the world, I too think the NYT columnist is the powerful one.

Not disagreeing, but I'd actually reframe it as the platform that has the power (i.e. of it's 170 year 'paper of record' reputation and disproportionately influential readership). The columnists (and Opinion writers) are simply the ones who wield and (mis-)use it.
