the problem isn't journalists got this wrong, because to some degree we all did. the problem is the recasting of history as 'my tribe got it right, and your tribe is why people are dying.' important to be humble, now, to admit our mistakes and be better.https://twitter.com/ComfortablySmug/status/1249398613815500802 …

increasingly i think the root mistake we made — across the western ideological spectrum, and from media and medicine to government and tech — was trusting the chinese government. this, at least, should be an easy thing to never do again.

What you’re saying doesn’t make sense to me. How is not taking covid-19 seriously after China locked down Wuhan because of the root mistake of trusting China too much?

for lots of China-watchers I follow, in both the tech and foreign policy communities, the mantra has always been 'watch what the CCP does, not what they say'. The real holy-shit moment was when they locked down the whole country in early Feb. Should have been obvious by then...

January all the information sources i follow were skewed to not trusting what was happening in China, or hoping that it worse than it actually was and the regime was about to collapse. The obsession with the CCP while analyzing a public health issue was the mistake.
