Thank your for an excellent example of a red herring argument. BTW, Eldon Katz's tweet was not an attempt at humor, but an actual argument to kill people and take their wealth. Over 1,000 people "liked" it.
my fault for using the word “joke” here, which i assumed would be understood as “finding humor in” the topic of mass murder (which is chilling) rather than “don’t believe in this thing.” included the eldon tweet bc it is CLEARLY a serious suggestion.

finding a gross tweet and attributing its POV to people who tweeted something tangentially related is an easy and dumb game. a guy being serious about something doesn't making the people joking about it not joking. that kind of argument has a name too

you love to hyperventilate about this stuff but I think you're savvy enough about language and its uses to know tweeting "eat the rich" doesn't mean you find the idea of actual cannibalism funny
