this is crude but I’ve never been able to get it out of my head that the income inequality debate is status anxiety of the top 10-15% transmuted into concern about *absolute inequality* which, if you care about actual data continues to improve

Nah bring bored is somewhat of a privilege ... boredom doesn’t come easy if your days are clogged with menial minimum wage work. In fact many high-income earners would cite boredom as valuable — it’s when passions are discovered and creativity flows — positive correlation maybe?
