It’s not that VC is harmful for society. It’s that it’s harmful for the individual companies they invest in (with some exceptions). VC is in the business of sacrificing individual companies for the benefit of the average. It sucks to be the individual in this game.

He's saying you get nudged into tradeoffs in favor of growth & ambition over sustainability & lifestyle. With the latter claimed as more important for individuals Idk how often that tradeoff exists, but makes sense that VCs would push for somewhat lower odds of massive outcomes

That seems consistent with what Austen's points. Mostly agree Austen is doing the morally right thing, even (or especially) if it's bad in expectation for his personal happiness Better to take a chance at being borlaug or gates than a contented life at the local charity
