yes, my point is alcohol is an integral part of human life for many of the reasons you listed as misguided depictions in film. coping, social lubrication, releasing bottled up emotion — this is why drinking exists. hollywood is reflecting reality here, it isn’t creating it.

global popularization of tobacco didn’t occur until the 17th/18th centuries, and westerners completely transformed the practice of smoking with cigarettes by the pack. so, maybe something like 1/50th the time we’ve had to adapt to alcohol.
