I would assume malice, not incompetence in this case. The problem isn't 'the government', because our government has been capable of great things in the past. The problem is globalism. We don't value the idea of the nation-state because of multi-billionaire globalists' popaganda.

I think it is both. Also, most of us do pay a lot of taxes, too much in fact. The issue is that there are a few very wealthy individuals who do not pay enough taxes and spent their money on unproductive assets that do not help the economy (i.e. jewelry, artwork, cars, planes).

No, rates are higher in Sweden, particularly on the middle class (where the money is). Their 57% max tax rate starts at just 1.5x median income, and VAT is 25%. (VAT being the key to high govt spending throughout Europe.)
