Ironically my impression is that while the median quality of journalism has decreased dramatically, there’s a long tail of extremely good journalists doing investigative work which has become increasingly important. So I’m not sure these things are mutually exclusive.

The Gawker case literally proves that the rich and powerful control our freedom of press. Especially through slap lawsuits. Not journalists. I'm not defending ideas expressed by Gawker, but to say that journalists are just power hungry is extremely misguided.
