the shit that goes on in non-venture backed, profitable, and old private cos is truly much wilder. there's a whole sector of the economy where this is the lived reality. 90%+ margins and no one to report to.

Any distinctive corporate culture is partly a retention plan. It’s a comp clawback denominated in reputation rather than cash. Higher-variance, but higher return as well.

Which also indicates that it’s a good sign when the business is unique, but if it’s a boring business with a crazy culture it just means the CEO has a problem.
