superhero movies are reactionary. they're popular bc they speak to deep meaning, and goodness, themes we no longer experience in almost any other form of pop culture. success of the films is frankly a hopeful sign; the ruling class no longer believes in heroes, but the people do.
All true, but the idea of "heroism" portrayed is so sanitized as to be almost meaningless. Relies heavily on the audience to project their own morality onto characters to fill in the gaps.
there are great films in the genre and poor films in the genre. imo the box office just proves how badly people need this in their lives. the death of god and country has left a gaping hole in us.
