why stop at an indoor smoking ban? let’s just ban cigarettes. and drinking. and complex carbs. let’s go ahead and make exercise mandatory. and while we’re at it yes, actually, let’s eradicate private healthcare and manage it all centrally.

one can use the public health argument to justify everything from altering the work week to forcing vaccinations on newborn children. it *has* been used to justify sterilizing people. collectivism has no bottom.

Yeah but it’s also quite plausible to get terrible societies by laissez-faire. I used to think libertarianism is a hall pass from having to pick values, but now I think governance necessarily is a struggle. You have to pick values and fiercely defend them.
