the insidious mainstreaming of pro-censorship advocacy is the most dangerous cultural phenomenon of the 21st century. our brief, american liberty has been an unprecedented historical outlier. if we don't fight for freedom, we will absolutely lose it in our lifetime.https://twitter.com/stengel/status/1189157532909981696 …

As a European who moved to the US, I do wonder why "every other country does it" is always used as a statement of something's worth, as if the exception must be behind rather than ahead. It's entirely possible that every other country can be wrong about something.

Your argument is that speech censorship directly led to the rise of Nazis and failed Socialism?

Maybe the reason they have hate speech laws is because they have a lived experience as a society with genocide, whereas America has never really come to terms with its own history slavery, Jim Crow, Cointelpro, taking Native American lands, etc.

This is true.

Europe has been around for milleniums, the "greatest country in the world" for 10-30 times less (depending to which EU country one compares), so your argument doesn't hold. You just hadn't had the time to produce your own monumental idiots, but you are trying really hard.

the point is saying “other countries do x, therefore x is moral” is an unacceptably juvenile argument. hate speech laws are a spectacular violation of our natural rights. if pro censorship activists are going to push for them, they need to actually make their case.
