(1/2) Well we need the humanities to an extent. Most, if not all, STEM jobs require writing and communication skills in order to get requirements for a project for clients and share ideas with colleagues.
you pick up writing and communication skills in elementary school. comparative literature is a nice thing to study that is absolutely irrelevant to success in business.

Yes, but I believe writing and communication skills need to be honed over the course of your career. I can't say too much about comparative literature so I can't comment on that. But if it is what it sounds like, it may be a good skill for researchers, who knows.
