      important to remember journalists were the unchallenged gatekeepers of ‘truth’ before social, and that shaped their psychology. it’s not just their business, it’s their identity — they really believe they’re uniquely equipped to understand the world. not bad people, just wrong.

      where are you going with this? journalism, like science, is a methodology for getting at the truth. who are supposed to be the arbiters of true vs. false if not the people (in journalism & other disciplines) seeking answers in a methodical way?

      But if you want a network to produce reliable information, you have to optimize it for that. That's exactly the point - Facebook optimizes for engagement, which promotes information that's sensational over information that's true. Critics say that's harmful. Why are they wrong?

          That said television channels get paid by advertisers and distributors for reach. So they will optimize for more people total not people constantly engaged. Presumably that changes their incentives from a strictly engagement driven business
