important to remember journalists were the unchallenged gatekeepers of ‘truth’ before social, and that shaped their psychology. it’s not just their business, it’s their identity — they really believe they’re uniquely equipped to understand the world. not bad people, just wrong.

That said television channels get paid by advertisers and distributors for reach. So they will optimize for more people total not people constantly engaged. Presumably that changes their incentives from a strictly engagement driven business
