Mike, this isn't accurate. Journalists have always been challenged by their readers — every day, in many cases. Before social media, people would call, write letters and even stop by newsrooms in person to give feedback on a story. We've always been under a microscope.

my point isn’t people never disagreed with the dominate narrative. my point is people didn’t used to have enough power for that to matter.

where are you going with this? journalism, like science, is a methodology for getting at the truth. who are supposed to be the arbiters of true vs. false if not the people (in journalism & other disciplines) seeking answers in a methodical way?

-Journalists “brand build” on Twitter, find extreme take on every story. Virality gets them job with major outlet when fake metrics new media employer goes under. -Legacy media embrace Gawker tone/tactics. -Journalistic sanctimony at all time high. Combined=loss of public trust.

Lot of conflation of 'journalists' and 'media' in this thread. Journalism is one of the most challenged professions in society (were Woodward & Bernstein unchallenged?). All journalism is media, but not all news media is journalism.

Real journalism is the finding and reporting of facts. 'Unique understanding of the world' doesn't come into it.

Aligning journalistic incentives with truth-seeking may become one of the most important problems of our time. Sensemaking and sensationalism don’t sit well together.
