They were formed by TV rules... whoever’s broadcast imagineers move the masses most wins. They say they’re guardians of the truth. They mean we need them to dream the proper dreams.
important to remember journalists were the unchallenged gatekeepers of ‘truth’ before social, and that shaped their psychology. it’s not just their business, it’s their identity — they really believe they’re uniquely equipped to understand the world. not bad people, just wrong.

where are you going with this? journalism, like science, is a methodology for getting at the truth. who are supposed to be the arbiters of true vs. false if not the people (in journalism & other disciplines) seeking answers in a methodical way?

Very WELL put. The power of social media is that it tears all the gates down. That means fake news also but lots and lots of people to point out truth from fake, not that it matters to some, who will continue to believe anything, oh wait, that happened w/ traditional media too :p

Lot of conflation of 'journalists' and 'media' in this thread. Journalism is one of the most challenged professions in society (were Woodward & Bernstein unchallenged?). All journalism is media, but not all news media is journalism.

Real journalism is the finding and reporting of facts. 'Unique understanding of the world' doesn't come into it.

It is the job of journalists to understand the truth and to present the truth. They should arrive for objectivity. Instead they've been taught subjectivism, and to let both "sides" speak. And they figured: why not simply present my own subjective view.
