The truth that there are sociopathic manipulators, and or evil people, out there taking advantage of/hurting people is a lot more uncomfortable for individuals to accept than a fantasy that some hidden entity was at play and that it's an anomaly.
the real problem with conspiracy theories is they’re all the same: hidden, powerful people hold the world together. they might be evil, but they’re smart, and they’re in charge. *someone* is in charge. that’s not a fear, that’s a desire. the truth is much more frightening.
