Want to blow a straight person’s mind? There is a drug called Truvada that a) makes nearly all HIV+ people completely asymptomatic b) prevents them from transmitting HIV c) is a 100% effective prophylactic for HIV d) is available to people with means e) is not for everyone else
yes and no, almost every gay bar i frequent has a bowl of free condoms. truvada, as discussed, is broadly affordable. eventually we're going to have to acknowledge that regardless of resources and information a subset of this population is going to make risky health choices

Condoms have been around since shepherds discovered sheepskin, and HIV is still a thing. You can place blame on people however you want, but if our policies don’t take into account the realities of the populations it affects, the disease will always be here.

never blamed anyone for getting HIV, on account of that would be fucking horrific. i'm saying you're wrong about truvada. magical thinking is not going to solve this problem.

If you think "available to an American with insurance" is "broadly affordable" I don't know what to tell you.

Counterpoint: condoms are way less effective against HIV than most people think (and even less effective against other STDs). You can contract HIV even if you're unreasonably careful about using condoms. I know people who have.

totally agree - don’t at all think condoms are perfect. but truvada has a zero percent chance of preventing antibiotic resistant syphilis or the next HIV.
