did a little research on the impact of unpaid internships this weekend and couldn't find anything to substantiate the claim they hurt young people. did find a few pieces on the impact of crippling, lifelong student debt however. might be worth exploring!

Even the smartest and most creative candidate has to eat. Optimize for who’s interesting, not for who’s a few coins cheaper because they’re from a wealthy family. Cisco gave me insane freedom as an intern — “you’re basically free to us” — it was great, but I did need rent money.

i worked through three internships. this is a normal thing people do. my parents had two and three jobs when i was a kid, depending on the season (more during christmas etc.). the interns over at vogue or on capitol hill aren't starving to death. this is an invented crisis.

There’s a collapse of training across the industrialized west that’s come with every hire being short term, and employers doing whatever they can to not hire at all. This is all the same crisis/non-crisis.

this was absolutely not true in publishing, this is absolutely not true in tech. don’t think this is true in government? data? and i’ve never heard of internships in retail, service, hospitality, construction, agriculture etc.
