And as long as we're out here modeling our world after famous board games - IMAGINE... if our elected officials had the backbone to give us Jumanji.

Landlord/colleges: “Funny, I just raised your rent/tuition by $1,000 a month.” Why is Yang proposing $12k/year UBI when we have yet to see the evidence that runaway automation is upon us?
-
Because he’s not a technologist he doesn’t realize automation is far away. He’s looking at abstracted and misleading metrics and predictions that have led him astray

Imagine if being born broke surrounded by broke people didn't mean you had to stay that way. Imagine if supply and demand were also combined with increased mobility into new markets. Imagine if you took the time to look at the math. Oh the things we can imagine!

Yang’s plan isn’t as simplistic as it comes across in tweets or soundbites. He’d like to replace other programs (and the overhead their complexities require) with UBI, not add it on top of them. Still not my thing, but if one supports a robust govt safety net, it makes sense.
-
It seems unrealistic to me that anyone could dismantle the programs already in place and replace them with UBI—but if one could, I think what he describes should make sense to people who would like to retain/improve a robust safety net.

At some point, tech is going to render a significant portion of the population unemployable/under-employable. We are going to have to address the concept of basic income. You can't keep putting your head in the sand and using what will at that point be outdated economic models.

at some point the sun will explode
