As long as majors are evaluated on the basis of cool/fun as opposed to being seen as a stepping stone for a career, this regret is likely to persist. Some students see it as a 4-yr club paid for by parents or loans. Consumer isn't always a responsible buyer.
it’s actually just cognitive dissonance imo. no one believes a 200 thousand dollar english degree is going to help them get a job. in fact english majors joke about this. but we also believe a degree - any degree - is essential to getting a job. v odd.
