I am curious as to why, at a practical level, this bothers some ppl so much. Let's say those rights had always been retained, what would be the utility in removing them? What's the argument for it in terms of contribution to rehabilitation or punishment?

you’re proposing the radical change here, not me. if you want to abolish prisons, the burden of explaining how this will not lead to chaos is yours.

The former. I think it makes sense to at least have that debate. I agree second amendment inside prisons is bad. Also not arguing for the abolishment of prisons. Though we must face our incarceration epidemic.
