i'm often told we're caught in a war of semantics — the left isn't arguing for 'real' socialism, they just want healthcare and free education. while this is true broadly, ocasio agrees with the standard definition of capitalism, and explicitly seeks to dismantle it.

this is actually the first time i've thought of him as pragmatic, but damn, wow, maybe - did he write at all about this? i know there were strong populist currents in the 30s and 40s.

You really have hit the nail on the head. Capitalism isn't working for these people. "Suck it up" isn't going to work forever, and either the champions of capitalism fix these problems, or they'll fix capitalism.

The entire premise of Bismarck socialism was as a foil for the rise of revolutionary socialism. That's why we now have pensions. Except those pensions are being now stripped away, along with opportunities.
