frame is less liberalism vs. socialism than growth vs. stasis. socialists once believed their system compatible with growth, which history unquestionably disproved. socialists now link stasis with morality — less a danger to us extra-nationally, catastrophic at home.

I think because growth, as we define it, rapid and at vast scale, feels unnatural to people. We haven't seen this since the early-to-mid century. Stasis, even gradual growth, feels more organic, perhaps what nature intends.

I’m not sure i buy this. If anything growth has slowed down in the last decade or so. In living memory we’ve got Japan’s industrialization, China’s, 30+ years of full force Moore’s law, dramatic expansion of air travel downmarket, etc. what’s bigger than all that today?
