also important to note almost every insane story, almost every horrific pile on, has been combatted or corrected by a journalist. most are good people trying to do good. it's just it takes so few bad actors to poison the internet, and the incentives to poison are powerful.
Less conspiratorial and more practical. It is easier to sell your politics if you have a clear enemy to point people at. Politicians generally don't have the public's best interest in mind.
