Still wrapping my mind around Prop C in SF. Not sure why a tax on gross receipts would make any sense at all https://www.sfchronicle.com/business/article/San-Francisco-s-business-taxes-are-a-confusing-13331125.php …pic.twitter.com/BtyIpHuQdo

Why don’t we discuss literally all of the other tax restrictions that voters *themselves* have embedded into the state Constitution over the last 40 years, making it exceedingly difficult to pass anything except for things that affect a hyper-narrow part of the tax base?!

agree it’s always worth talking about the failures of direct democracy in california, but also think there’s some value in parsing the specifically heinous and unjust tax we just passed. i’m hoping animation here will lead to vigilance, finally.

How is redistributing the wealth of the most recent economic boom to care for the city’s poorest residents unjust?

i know you love to beat that “big tech eats the homeless” strawman, but i’m not referring to the fact that prop c won’t fix anything (thanks btw). i’m referring to the fact that it unjustly impacts businesses in different ways. salesforce does well, for example, square does not.

Like I said in previous arguments on this issue, the city is highly likely to run another gross receipts measure in 2020, in which Square/Stripe could’ve argued to change the structure on their low-margin businesses. https://www.sfchronicle.com/business/article/As-Silicon-Valley-looks-to-tax-tech-San-13042149.php … pic.twitter.com/2XpmZNEJyc

Also @TheCoalitionSF did make changes in their proposed structure in response to Chamber Commerce feedback on retail employment. Had Dorsey been heavily engaged in the district his co is located in like other cos (Zendesk) for yrs, bet you he could’ve had influenced it.
