There will always be a clash between industry and academia. Industrialists trade money and shares, academics can (mostly) only trade status and reputation. That's why (some) academics fight so hard for status- at the end of the day, they know they can't buy bread with citations.

this would also explain the academy's cultural divide between the sciences / humanities. paths in the sciences to patent, at least.
