As I understood it, it was a joke that stuck. Then the NYT piece picked up on it. I don't think they're necessarily trying to create a unified tribe.

Eh... maybe. It's a primitive identity, at best. Proto-identity. They're still defining what it means to be part of that "tribe", and I think more than likely there will be more than one identity to emerge. The Sam Harris crowd is not identical to the Jordan B. Peterson crowd.
