I think the 'intellectual dark web' is hardly an identity at all. It's a term popularized by the NYT to include any notable voice outside the Overton window. They're more defined by what they're not, rather than what they are. I hardly find it a useful name in practice.
the term came from the community. they like it. this is in fact the most damning evidence of identity - they named themselves!

As I understood it, it was a joke that stuck. Then the NYT piece picked up on it. I don't think they're necessarily trying to create a unified tribe.

And unsurprisingly, I think it's being applied liberally to a wide field of people, many of whom vehemently disagree with each other. How is that a coherent identity?
