People choose to believe the theory of atonement which best suites their view of the relationship God has with mankind. Propitiation and expiation are appealing to those who view God as foreign and scary. It's a necessary view to reconcile these individuals.

Respect isn’t a uniquely human concept. It pervades the animal kingdom and all it’s hierarchies. Being aware of how to give and illicit respect is of great importance to succeeding as a man in society — but is rarely taught or studied directly outside the bounds of the military.
