In advance, please excuse my clumsy articulation as I can't help but feel this echoes the Schrodinger cat paradox... The observer can't truly know what's going on (be it in the box or in the culture) because the act of observation enmeshes you w/ the subject and skews the result.

I think that works.
But the low hanging fruit is the forest for the trees analogy (except people are trees, too).
