Curious what Republican voters think about the GOPs behavior in some of these states, ie TN, NC, FL, TX, WI? Because, to me, it looks like they’re crooks who’ve resorted to stealing and lying, sometimes to their own constituents (Cotham) where they can’t win/hold seats honestly.

WATCH: “Speaker Sexton sent lawyers to tell us we can’t come back until 2025 — nothing about this is constitutional.” @brotherjones_ says Sexton may be planning not to seat him & @Justinjpearson even if their communities send them back. Not democracy. #TenensseeThree

The Tennessee legislature responds to the Tyre Nichols murder by . . . overriding police accountability measures passed by voters, stripping civilian review boards of their power, and making it more difficult to investigate abuse and excessive force.

Lost in the 24-hour news cycle is that the state legislature is one step closer to killing civilian review/oversight boards in Memphis & Nashville (SB 0591/HB 0764) in the wake of the Tyre Nichols' killing. It will remove oversight of police abuses/use-of-force incidents. 1/x

We’re doing what now I’m America? Allowing a majority party to expel three duly-elected members of a minority party because they have the numbers to do it?
Quote Tweet
Tennessee Republican lawmakers took the first steps Monday to expel three Democratic members from the GOP-dominant House for their role in a recent gun control protest at the state Capitol . apnews.com/article/tennes

Wow, this generation of powerbrokers (feels weird to call them lawmakers) is the “gift” that just keeps on giving. They’ve created so many more problems than they solved and their power death-rattle is terrifying…theappeal.org/georgia-crimin Take ‘er down a few notches gamgam + pappy

I find it interesting that so many arms of the state are trying to shove this insane power-grab down our throats. It’s weird, it’s dangerous, and the first amendment right to free speech deserves a longer and, frankly better, debate than this.

NEW: Americans support banning TikTok by a 57% to 36% margin, Marist survey finds. Support is bipartisan, too, with majorities of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents all in favor of a ban. Gen Z / Millennial support now at almost 50%.

If you’re not paying attention to what’s happening here because you think it’s just about tiktok, please pay attention. They’re trying to strip our most fundamental rights undercover of night because they don’t want you to know.

Rand Paul, citing the First Amendment, blocks an attempt by Josh Hawley to fast-track a complete ban of TikTok. Paul then ridicules Republicans who purport to oppose online censorship, but now suddenly demand that the federal government impose censorship on an unprecedented scale

Why is Rep. Moolenaar asking FDA Commissioner Califf about milk...again? Nobody is unaware that almond/oat milk isn't cow milk. This is one of the dumbest debates that I think I've ever seen in my political life and I can't believe it's still a discussion.

Plus: the law demanded by the Biden Admin in the name of banning TikTok extends far beyond that one platform; it could potentially be the gravest pro-censorship power yet. We'll also examine MSNBC's exploitation of anti-Semitism this week. On Nashville: greenwald.substack.com/p/the-demented

The RESTRICT Act is not limited to just TikTok. It gives the government authority over all forms of communication domestic or abroad and grants powers to “enforce any mitigation measure to address any risk” to national security now and in any “potential future transaction”

The second (b) would allow the Secretary to bypass competitive hiring practices including notice of job, application review, and requirements for qualifications, examinations, veterans' preference, and other procedures.

And I forgot these beauties right at the beginning of the section. The first (a) would exempt the Secretary of Commerce from having to obtain OMB approval or submit reports to Congress regarding information collection activities related to this proposed law.

I have created a document (with help from Chatgpt) that goes through these section-by-section and provides a brief analysis of what they do and their potential implications. If any wonks decide to delve into this and want that document, send me a DM.

ATTN: Policy Wonks - I've been reading through the "tiktok ban" bill; yes, I do this for fun. I hope I'm wrong, but the lingo appears to exempt the federal government from all accountability and transparency with regard to executing the sweeping new powers it'd grant the feds.
